THE GREEN TEAM

The aim of the Green Team is to promote environmental awareness of key issues in the world to increasingly make our school eco-friendly. In 2020 we officially became an 'Eco-School' and have since achieved Bronze and Silver awards. We are now working towards the final stage and hope to be awarded with our first Green Flag in the near future.

The Green Team keeps in touch via Google Classroom and meets in year-level groups at least once a term. In 2020, an environmental review was carried out by the Green Team in order to identify all of the positive things that our school is doing for the environment as well as to shine a light on areas where the school needs to improve. Below are the findings from this review and the action plan that is currently in place.

  1. Eco-Schools Topic: Litter

Aim: To see less litter in the school grounds

Action(s):

  • Green Team members to create posters to put in classroom windows to remind people about what to do with their litter

  • Green Team to talk to students if they catch them littering

Aim: To encourage students and staff to put their waste in the right bin

Action(s):

  • Green Team to email Mr Clutterbuck about getting more bins for the playground and a food waste bin for classrooms

  • Green Team to think about how to address the issue of students putting non-recyclable items in recycling bins. Commented that some classrooms don’t seem to have general waste bins.

The Green Team's most recent action was to promote and encourage students to all participate in the 'Mindfulness Minutes' challenge which started during the January/February Home Learning period. This was an initiative set-up by Eco-Schools England which aims to improve the mental health and well-being of young people and their families through finding valuable time to be mindful, calm and more aware. The Green Team created and shared their ideas for various mindful tasks that students at Coombe Hill Junior could participate in, along with their families, over a four week period. Their goal was to help Eco-Schools England achieve their target of one million minutes of mindfulness in schools (nationally) by July 2021. So far, Coombe Hill Junior School has achieved a total of 50,491 Mindfulness Minutes!

The Green Team are currently working on the school's Eco-Code. This will be the Green Team's mission statement and will demonstrate the school's commitment to improving its environmental performance. All students in the school were recently sent a survey to complete in order to contribute their thoughts and ideas for this. Once finalised, the Eco-Code will be displayed clearly on the school's Eco-Board.

In the last few years, The Green Team has achieved the following:

  • Collaborated with the 'Bike-it Squad' to promote cycling

  • Won the Co-operative Green Schools Revolution competition (regional winners) - awarded £1,000 to support Green projects at Coombe Hill Juniors. The money was used to help finance the Secret Garden, built with reclaimed, recycled and sustainable materials.

  • Developed our school grounds through the planting of trees donated from the Woodland Trust in our outdoor learning area

  • Promoted healthy living by running a healthy bake sale, in collaboration with ‘The Bake it up’ promotion, initially run in Ontario, Canada

  • Participated in the Kingston Climate Emergency Youth Survey.
