What happens in Year 5?
Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year for the children. In the upper school they are expected to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning. These skills are developed throughout the year during a variety of tasks and lessons and provide the key foundations that prepare our children for the challenges of Year 6.
As they come to the end of Year 5, their responsibilities widen with the children taking on the important role of mentoring children in Year 2 before their move from the Infants to Juniors.
Day by Day guide:
Children need reading records and pencil cases in school every day.
It is important that all children continue to read to and discuss texts with an adult on a regular basis. Children should read for ten minutes every night and at least once during the weekend (Friday to Sunday). Reading records must be signed by an adult to confirm that daily reading has been done. If children have not read or forgotten to get their reading record signed, they will be asked to catch up with this reading at lunchtime.
This year, children will be taking part in the Accelerated Reader programme, which encourages all children to engage with a wide variety of texts from the library. Children will have the opportunity to answer mini quizzes based on these books, allowing them to further develop comprehension skills and understanding. Year 5 children are expected to take out and return books to the library during their designated library slot each week and when the library is open throughout the school day.
PE Kits
Children will need to remember their PE kits (kits need to be named) for their two PE days (one indoor and one outdoor). The timetable may change at short notice, so it is beneficial for the children to have their PE kits in school for the entire week. Children will come into school dressed in appropriate PE kit for their 2 outdoor PE days.
All children have swimming lessons in the summer term and will need their swimming kit on their day. The children will find out their swimming day after the Easter holidays.
Uniform
We encourage all children to set an example in Year 5 to the rest of the school with regards to presenting themselves and their uniform. Please remind your children to have their shirts tucked in with ties done neatly and to have long hair tied up at all times.
Homework
Homework is given out on a weekly basis. Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday and collected in the following Monday. Spellings homework will be set on a Monday and then the spellings will be tested the following Monday. The children will also be given Topic based homework during the year that should be handed into the teacher every 2 weeks. The children's Google Classrooms will be updated with the homework tasks and the weekly spellings.
If homework is not handed in or completed to the expected standard, children will have to complete the work at lunchtime. If children are absent when homework or spellings are given out, it is their responsibility to get the relevant work from their teacher.
